Japan to Attack Australia??
|
In early 1942, Darwin was used as a military base and as a transit point for forces and aircraft being sent to Timor, Ambon and Java in the Netherlands East Indies (modern Indonesia) before these islands fell to the Japanese. •The Japanese realized that the position of this base prevented them from taking over these islands, and so on 19th February 1942, they instigated air raids on the Darwin base. 64 air raids on Darwin and 33 air raids on other parts of Australia occurred. Local sources estimated that between 900 and 1100 people were killed. For many years, government censorship limited coverage of the event to protect public morale in the southern states of Australia.
